The Förder- und Freundeskreis Elliniko e.V. was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in summer 2013 to support the social medical practice Ellinikó in Athens. Later, their solidarity work was extended to other social practices and social centres throughout Greece. With their association, they supported the practices and clinics with medical equipment, huge amounts of medicines, vaccines, baby food and more. Occasionally, they also provided support for state clinics. With the law passed in 2016, which entitles every Greek to medical care in a state clinic, this changed fundamentally.
The state clinics, bled dry by years of budget cuts and the departure abroad of more than 20,000 doctors and nurses, were unable to withstand this onslaught. In particular, the completely outdated technical equipment hindered adequate care. Elliniko has been increasingly involved here since 2017 in order to fulfil the tasks at least at a certain equipment level. Through extensive on-site research, they ensure that only absolutely necessary equipment is purchased at extremely well-negotiated prices. For example, the installation of the intensive care unit in Katerini Hospital, which they initiated, has saved the lives of countless people since 2017.
Ongoing support continues to be given to the LYSO’s Garden project in Kalamata, which provides disabled young people with an opportunity for training in ecological gardening, and O Topos Mou in Katerini, which organises innumerable social aid programmes.
Their focus has changed, but the need is still great!
Thanks to the help of countless people, they have managed to collect 950,000€ in donations to date (as of August 2021) and to provide medical equipment and hospital supplies worth well over 1 million €. All the money donated goes directly to Greece without deductions.
